Expedient (adjective): Convenient and practical for achieving a particular goal, even though it may be improper or immoral. Example: an expedient shortcut that bends the rules.

Here are some examples of the word expedient:

  • The senator found it expedient to shift his stance on rent control when the polls shifted, even though he’d spent years arguing the opposite position.

  • It seemed expedient to copy my friend’s homework, but in hindsight, I should’ve chosen a friend with an A in the class.

  • In times of crisis, we may opt for what is expedient rather than what is just.
