Refutation: An SAT Word You Can't Prove Wrong
If you refute in a dispute, what do you do?
This one’s interesting because it sort of sounds like REFUSE and DISPUTE, and has elements of each.
The noun form is basically what you say or do back to someone to prove them wrong. Like if someone accuses of you of scratching their car (just happened to me, actually), your REFUTATION could be the dash cam evidence that the scratch was already there (and this also happened to me).
📚️ Definition of Refutation
Refutation (noun): The act of proving a statement, argument, or belief to be false or incorrect, typically by presenting evidence or logical reasoning that contradicts it. Example: a refutation to a baseless accusation.
🗣️ Pronunciation of Refutation
IPA: /ˌrɛf.jʊˈteɪ.ʃən/ (See IPA key)
Respelling: ref-yoo-TAY-shun
📰 Examples of Refutation
Here are some examples of the word refutation:

“A refutation is a proof of the contradictory.” — Aristotle, On Sophistical Refutations (c. 350 BCE)
